Aaagh! How do I get out of Full Screen mode?

You know - we've all been there!  You press something and suddenly you are in FULL SCREEN MODE with no visible way onscreen of getting out, and you remember there was a key that got you out of it, but which one?  Well - it's F11 to exit full screen mode in most browsers and most of the later versions of Microsoft Windows.  If you know of any browsers that F11 doesn't work with in this way, and/or if you have any workarounds for these, please comment, and we could build up a useful resource here for ourselves.

Is your Insert key not working on your keyboard in Word 2010?

Have you been wondering why the Insert key isn't working any more on your keyboard in Word 2010?  This is a very useful feature for filling in forms or changing text without destroying the formatting of the document.

You need to turn on this feature in Word Options as follows:

1. Choose File, Options
2. Select ADVANCED
3. In Editing Option tick the “Use the Insert key to control overtype mode “ check box.
4. Click OK

Magic!  From now on, whenever you want to to turn Overtype mode on or off,  just press the INSERT key

Do you wonder what is the difference between a vector image and a bitmap image?

Vector or Bitmap?  The Dilemma

Ok, so you have downloaded a zipped folder from a royalty-free image provider such as istockphoto.com and you may have two files - one ending in .bmp and one ending in .eps.  If you click on the .bmp file you can see your image, but the other one may come up with "Windows can't open this file", so you don't go any further.  But wait!  The vector image format could actually be a much better one for your purposes if you have the right tools to edit it.

More about Vector files

.eps stands for Encapsulated PostScript and can be opened and edited in programs such as Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw

Other commonly used vector file extensions are:

.SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) .AI (Adobe Illustrator Graphics) .CDR (CorelDraw Vector Graphics) .WMF (Windows Metafile Format) and .DRW (Vector Drawing file)

Vector files are usually much smaller than Bitmap, and much more easily scalable, so good for your web site or Social Media use.

Bitmap files

.bmp (Bitmap) files are more familiar, and more suited to photographic images as they handle complex colours better.

Typical commonly used bitmap file extensions are:

.PSD .JPG, .GIF, and .TIF

Editing your Vector file

To find out if you have software for editing your vector file on your PC, right click on the filename and choose "Open with", and a list of suitable software should come up,  If not, surf the Web for "free vector graphics editors 2011" or something similar (be sure to check the date of the article so that you get the latest software).

After that, it's up to you!  Some of these image editing packages can be quite complicated, but I'm sure you'll find your way to do the basics of sizing and cropping, and you will be impressed with the superlative quality of your vector image.

HPP50 Laptop Restore

Problem History

We recently had a client whos broadband  service had been suspended by their internet service provider (ISP) due to their laptop having been hijacked with a virus and being used as part of a botnet.  In order to for the clients broadband service to be restored the ISP was insisting on the hard drive being reformatted and the operating system being reinstalled.   The clients laptop model was a Hewlett Packard HP550.

The following text has been taken directly from the Hewlett Packard support site and is essential information when deciding how to proceed if you need to recover your HP laptop or PC.

HP provided operating system or recovery discs for most PCs made from 2001 to 2005, but stopped including recovery discs in 2006. At that point HP configured the computers with a recovery function that lets you: recover the OS from files stored on a special partition on the hard drive without needing an optical disc drive, or create a personal recovery disc that is specific to your computer. For most models, a replacement recovery disc can be purchased from HP. See HP Notebook PCs - Order Recovery Discs For Windows 7, Vista, Or XP .

HPP50 Laptop Restore Solution

  • To start I rebooted the laptop and continually pressed escape (Official HP 550 Maintenance and Service Guides says F11 so you can also try that)
  • This then gave me a screen with an option to press F8 for advanced options – I Pressed F8
  • I selected the option - 'Restore hard drive to its original factory state'
  • I then followed the instructions from there onwards.

Basically what happened is the hard drive was reformatted (wiped) removing all the data and removing the nasty botnet viruses the client had picked up. This took approximately an hour.

Once the hard drive had been reformatted the Vista Home Premium operating system was automatically reinstalled, this only required a few very simple self explanatory inputs from me such as regional options, keyboard, date & time settings and a user name .

Once that was completed, before doing anything else I made sure that the windows firewall was on and immediately went on line to activate and update the preinstalled 60 day trial version of McFee.

And that was it – the whole process took about an hour and a half.

If the above does not work or for a different model HP computers this link to the HP technical support section is very useful.
